UK student visa applications decrease...

27 May 2016

Figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that, in the year to March 2016, the number of university sponsored visa applications (specific to each university and dependent on being offered a place) fell 1% to 164,124.

Over the same period, Russell Group universities saw a 7% increase in applications to 75,403

These numbers come with the backdrop of total study visa applications decreasing by 5% to 206,162 on a year earlier – the lowest since 2007 - probably due to tighter UK student immigration rules.

The total drop in applications is significant in the context of the number of non-EU students (i.e. those that require visas to study in the UK) seeking an education abroad, which grew about 6% over the same period

Does the government need to re-think its student visa policy, in the light of education being one of the UK’s most successful exports?
