UK employment reaches highest since 1971

The figures continue the trend that started in late 2011/early 2012

The unemployment rate was 5.6%, compared to 6.9% one year earlier and, at 1.84 million, the number of people unemployed was 416,000 fewer than one year ago.

The definition of the employment rate is the number of people aged from 16 to 64 that are employed

The ONS also said that wages (excluding bonuses) rose on average 1.8% over the period compared to one year earlier.
